My New Nephew Drake

I am a little shaken up today since I just got home from the hospital and had to write about my experience today. I am a proud aunt of my new nephew, Drake who was born today weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces and 20 1/2 inches long to my brother, Brody and his wife, Katie. I left the kids with Blake and went to visit them at the hospital. I am so glad I went when I did because things went terribly wrong. Drake was taken into NICU because he wasn't breathing on his own. He was born at 9:34 am by c-section because Katie cannot deliver vaginally. She finally got to go see him at 2:30 pm and hold him for about 30 mins. She went back to her room and began to finally eat something when she began to hemorrhage. This is when I arrived. Everyone else had gone home and when I knocked on their door, the nurse answered and I knew something was going wrong. Shortly after Brody came out and told me that she has lost A LOT of blood and her blood pressure was 50 over 20 and they were surprised she was still alive. They just called her doctor. Brody went back in the room and I called my mom and told her to came back up. About 2 minutes later Brody came back out and had me call Katie's mom and have them ride together. Katie was being rushed into the operating room where she might undergo a hysterectomy. She also had to have a blood transfusion. Apparently her uterus wasn't contracting and therefore she was losing lots of blood. I happened to be in the hall when about 6 nurses came out of their room running her bed down the hall. Two male RN's were following and one of them said that there wasn't anything they could do but keep a prayer in their hearts that she would make it. This all happened within 15 minutes of me arriving at the hospital. Katie did very well and once they put her under, her doctor was able to massage her uterus from the outside and get her stable. The doctor said that we have 7 units of blood in our bodies and she had lost 4 and if had happened to you or I then we would have died. They gave her two units of blood and she continued to be stable and they didn't have to operate after all. I left when they wheeled Katie back in their room and Drake is now off oxygen waiting for his mom to recover. I am so grateful that everything has worked out and today has finally had it's happy ending. Katie still isn't out of the woods yet, and they are hoping that she can keep her uterus. I know we will be praying for her. Oh and by the way, Drake is SO cute.
